FRC Team 980 “The ThunderBots” is an award-winning, community-based FIRST Robotics team located in the Burbank/Glendale area. Students come from high schools throughout Burbank/Glendale/Sunland-Tujunga/North-East LA. They work with our amazing group of dedicated mentors, sponsors and teachers, including a JPL Project Engineer for the Radiation Monitor on Mars Curiosity Rover, the Designer/Builder/Driver of a world land speed record vehicle, and an Amusement Park Ride Engineer for Disney and Universal Studios.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded by Segway inventor Dean Kamen in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. Dean’s passion and determination to help young people discover the excitement and rewards of science and technology are the cornerstones of FIRST. As Dean says, “We think of FIRST as a sport-like competition where all students can become professionals.”
FRC (FIRST Robotic Competition) Team 980 The ThunderBots was founded in 2001, and has won many Major Awards, including Los Angeles Regional 2014 Finalist; Silver Medal, Los Angeles Regional 2013; Los Angeles Regional 2010 Finalist; Los Angeles Regional 2008 Winners; Los Angeles Regional 2007 Finalist; Southern California Regional 2004 Winner. Our current sponsors include Walt Disney Imagineering, JPL/NASA, Schroeder Tension Bars, Solutions for Automation, and Luminance Technologies.
Team 980 meets throughout the year in our build site on the Walt Disney Imagineering campus. When not in competition season, the team continues to fine tune its robot, as well as offering classes in C++, CAD and other related topics.
High School age students from any school are welcome to come check them out! New team members can join at any time, but during the summer or fall is the ideal time to “groove” into the team before the winter competition season.
FRC Team 980 ThunderBots is a 501(c)(3) corporation. Donations are tax deductible. Adult mentors with skills in engineering, business and project management are welcome.
